A heat pump is an energy-efficient system used for heating and cooling spaces. It works by transferring heat rather than generating it through combustion like traditional heating systems.
Essentially, a heat pump extracts heat from one place (such as the air, ground, or water) and transfers it to another (such as your home).
During the colder months, the heat pump extracts heat from outside (even in low temperatures) and brings it inside to warm your home. In warmer months, it can work in reverse, acting like an air conditioner by extracting heat from inside and releasing it outdoors.
Heat pumps are known for being highly efficient because they move heat rather than generate it, which means they can provide more heat energy than the electrical energy they consume — typically 3-4 times more. This makes them a more sustainable and cost-effective option for year-round heating and cooling.
There are several types of heat pumps, each designed for specific applications:
Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs): These extract heat from the outside air. Even in cooler temperatures, modern ASHPs are engineered to capture sufficient energy, making them a popular choice for residential heating and cooling.
Ground (or Geothermal) Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs): These tap into the stable temperatures underground by circulating a fluid through buried pipes. While they may involve higher upfront installation costs, they typically offer very high efficiency and lower operating costs over time.
Water Source Heat Pumps (WSHPs): These leverage heat from a nearby water body, such as a lake or river, which can be particularly effective in areas with accessible water resources.
