Tell-Tale Signs That Your Boiler Needs Repair Work

Posted on: August 30th, 2013 by Active

A boiler is indispensable; it helps provide you with all the hot water you need, as well as heating your home and making it comfortable. Just like any other appliance or device in your home, a boiler will give out certain signs or symptoms indicating repairs.

You should never ignore these signs, as the problem may get exacerbated and become quite expensive to fix later on. Even worse, you could put your family at risk; boilers that are not inspected and maintained regularly could potentially leak carbon monoxide, which is an odourless and tasteless toxic gas that is tough to detect.

In the UK, 50 people die due to carbon monoxide poisoning every year. This, therefore, makes sense to install a carbon monoxide alarm in your house, besides keeping an eye out for the tell-tale signs.

Leaking Water

If your boiler begins leaking water, it is an indication you need a technician to get it repaired. Often, the water will pool at the base of the boiler. If you do not get the leak fixed, you will be saddled with high utility bills and have an inefficient boiler on your hands.

Unusual Sounds

Boilers usually work without making much of a sound. So, if your boiler begins making strange or unusual noises, it is time to call up a qualified and experienced company to carry out the repairs. This could be a sign that sludge has collected in the boiler resulting in uneven distribution of water, and can cause a boiler to overheat and make it inefficient.

Pilot Light Going Off

If the pilot light goes off, you should first follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how to fire it up again. If this does not work, it is time to call in the expert to find out what is ailing your boiler. Usually, when the pilot light fails to come on, it could be a problem with the ignition system or a case of blockage/soot build-up.
